No Copy Protection on Australian Sony BMG CDs |
|
SONY BMG can assure you that all CDs and DVDs manufactured by us in Australia or New Zealand for local release do not contain content protection technology developed by UK company First4Internet.
First4Internet's XCP technology was used in the US for a limited number of titles manufactured for release there. This has been referred to as "rootkit" technology and has been the subject of recent media coverage.
The easiest way to work out if a CD or DVD is manufactured in Australia or New Zealand for local release is to look at its back cover. Discs manufactured in Australia for local release will state "Distributed in Australia by SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT (AUSTRALIA) PTY LIMITED". These products will also not have a "Copy Control Technology" logo, which is on products that contain any kind of copy protection technology. In New Zealand, CDs will state "Manufactured and Distributed in New Zealand by SBME (NZ) Ltd" or "Made in New Zealand".
If you have a complaint in relation to any CDs not manufactured in Australia, please visit cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/ or provide feedback at cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/form11.html
A customer letter issued in the United States in relation to the limited number of products manufactured there with the First4Internet XCP technology can be found at cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/customerletter.html
A list of titles released in the United States containing the XCP technology can be viewed at cp.sonybmg.com/xcp/english/titles.html

What is DualDisc? |
|
DualDisc has both a CD player side and a DVD side, allowing artists to create in exciting new ways using audio, video and computer content - all on a single two-sided disc.
What Is On A DualDisc?
One side is the full-length CD audio album. The other side offers DVD content. This may include enhanced album audio, 5.1 surround sound, music videos, artist interviews, behind-the-scenes footage, documentary films, photo galleries, lyrics, computer-ready digital song files, and Web links. It all depends on the artist.
Do I Need New Equipment?
No (see below). However, to take full advantage of DualDiscs that feature surround sound music, youšll need a 5.1 channel surround system.
What Is Enhanced Audio And Surround Sound?
The DVD side of the DualDisc offers superior audio. Many DualDiscs include surround sound mixes that have been specially created during the recording process. When listened to on a 5.1 channel surround system, the result is a rich, three-dimensional musical experience.
Where Can I Play A DualDisc?
We recommend using the DVD side if you have a DVD player in order to enjoy the entire album in enhanced audio and the additional DVD features. The DVD side plays wherever a DVD plays - including many gaming consoles and computers. In a PC, the DVD side acts like a DVD-ROM on DualDiscs that include computer extras and Web links. The CD side plays on all but a limited number of CD and DVD models.
How Can I Tell Which Side Is Which?
Each side is clearly marked for play on a CD or DVD player.
What If I Put A DualDisc In My Player Upside-Down?
If you place the DVD side in a CD player, it will not play - just turn it over and re-insert.
What DualDisc Titles Are Available?
Keep an eye on this web site for a range of DualDisc titles across a variety of genres, for both new and catalog releases. Dual Disc will be denoted on sonybmg.com.au as the format type when viewing the release information page.

Internet File Sharing - Separating Myth from Reality |
|
The Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) debunk a number of common myths about File Sharing.
COMMON MYTHS:
-
Downloading music for free doesn't give rise to any problems.
-
Most recording artists are doing very well, so downloading a few tracks for free is not going to hurt them.
-
Unauthorised copying doesn't have any measurable effect on the music industry.
-
Downloading for free benefits artists as it gets them heard which promotes their music and boosts sales.
-
The music industry wants to stop the advance of technology.
-
There are no legitimate services currently available in Australia.
-
Nothing can be done to stop illegal downloading.
-
Downloading is just like home taping.
-
The record companies only have themselves to blame for not getting their artists' tracks online quickly enough.

Is it OK to use "peer to peer" file sharing networks like Kazaa or Morpheus? What about burning copies of CDs and giving them to your friends? |
|
Here is what Music United (an American music industry initiative) has to say: You may not think you're doing anything illegal when you burn multiple copies of your favorite CD to give to all your friends or offer copies of your favorite tracks to millions of people on the Internet through "peer to peer" networks like Kazaa or Morpheus. The fact is, however, that when you do this sort of thing, you're taking something that doesn't belong to you. The right to reproduce the music you're copying belongs to the artists, songwriters, record companies and others who hold the copyright. All of which means that when you copy and distribute copyrighted music without permission, you are stealing. There are many reasons why you shouldn't steal music. Here are four basic ones. 1. Stealing music is against the law. 2. Stealing music betrays the songwriters and recording artists who create it. 3. Stealing music stifles the careers of new artists and up-and-coming bands. 4. Stealing music threatens the livelihood of the thousands of working people from recording engineers to record-store clerks who are employed in the music industry. SONY BMG Licensing - Overview & Guidelines |
|
SONY BMG's Licensing Department handles the licensing of SONY BMG's catalogue of sound recordings and music videos in Australia. SONY BMG's Licensing Department offers non-exclusive licences for a range of uses, including synchronisation licences (eg. films, computer games and audio-visual presentations); compilation licences; communication to the public licences (eg. transmission in media such as television, radio, internet or mobile devices) and public performance (eg. playing music videos and sound recordings in public places, such as commercial premises). You will need to negotiate a licence agreement with SONY BMG's Licensing Department before using any of SONY BMG's sound recordings or music videos. Please complete and return the following Licensing Enquiry Application Form. Licence applications and are considered and negotiated on a case-by-case basis having regard to the proposed use. Once the completed Application Form is considered, a quote will be provided which will be subject to contract and in most cases will also be subject to formal clearance (eg. artist or label approval). In the event that agreement is reached on the terms, a formal licence agreement will be issued for signing. Please note that: 1. A separate licence is required in relation to the use of musical works and lyrics embodied in sound recordings and music videos. You will need to contact the relevant music publisher or music publishing collecting society (eg. APRA/AMCOS in Australia) to obtain the necessary publishing licence(s). 2. In relation to certain types of public performance and communication to the public, you may also directly approach the Phonographic Performance Company of Australia ( PPCA) which non-exclusively offers licences which cover SONY BMG's catalogue (together with the catalogues of other record companies) eg. licences for broadcasting, music on hold and playing music in commercial premises. 3. Particular sound recordings do not have public performance or broadcast rights in Australia, which means that a licence is not required to exercise those rights. Independent legal advice should be sought to determine which sound recordings fall within this exception. 4. SONY BMG may revise this Overview & Guidelines section from time to time in its discretion.
